Meet Aliki and Kal Kvitne of Koukla Robes in Pasadena - Voyage LA Article

Today, we’d like to introduce you to Aliki and Kal Kvitne.

Koukla Robes began with their search for the ultimate bath wrap. Their unique collection of luxury bath accessories was started by mother-daughter duo Kal and Aliki Kvitne. Being of Greek descent, both Kal and Aliki’s childhood nickname was “Koukla” (pronounced kook-la). In Greece, koukla is a term of endearment for young girls, meaning “darling” or “doll”.

Aliki was first introduced to the idea of bath wraps when she was gifted one as newly initiated member of her sorority at USC. She was so in love with the concept, but was disappointed by how quickly the fabric and Velcro would deteriorate. For the past several years, Aliki and Kal have been searching for the softest, most beautiful fabric and styles of bath wraps.

With great excitement and enthusiasm, they are thrilled to finally share their favorite finds with all of you! Carefully designed to combine comfort and style, their line makes you feel beautiful and comfortable while relaxing. Quality is extremely important to them at Koukla Robes, which is why their products are made with the highest quality of materials. Since launching, their line has expanded from bath wraps to the finest bath robes, cosmetic headbands, and face rollers…and they have big plans for the future!

Has it been a smooth road?
Because Koukla Robes is an online business, our biggest struggle has been to communicate how luxurious and soft our bathrobes and bath wraps truly are. When we have sold at various boutiques and trunk shows, we sell out because everyone is amazed at the quality and feel of our fabric. The second someone touches a Koukla bathrobe or bath wrap, they are sold. Unfortunately, with the majority of our business being conducted online, our customers don’t have the opportunity to feel our products before purchasing.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Koukla Robes story. Tell us more about the business.
Koukla Robes is a unique collection of luxury bathrobes, bath wraps, and other accessories. Quality is extremely important to us, which is why our products are made with the highest quality of materials. To make our products, we use the highest quality of microfiber which is brushed by hand multiple times to ensure maximum softness. It’s actually amazing because it doesn’t resemble the microfiber that everyone is used to. It’s silky and buttery against the skin. Furthermore, our production takes place in Los Angeles and is all made by hand. In fact, it takes two people to create a single Koukla bathrobe and bath wrap, so no two are exactly the same. We know that this sounds like a lot of work for bath accessories, but our methodology ensures consistent quality control and customer satisfaction.

Aside from KouklaRobes.com, these bathrobes and bath wraps can only be found in 5 Star hotels and spas around the world. At Koukla Robes, we have taken these luxurious, high-end products and reduced the prices by more than half (because of our low overhead) in order to share them with a much larger customer base. You literally cannot find this quality at our reasonable prices anywhere else.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
We’ve all seen pictures online, on social media, and in various tabloids of celebrities wearing leisurewear out in public. Society has done away with dress code limitations. We predict that more and more people will feel comfortable wearing their pjs and bathrobes out in public.

We also see a downward shift in quality within the fashion industry. Retail companies are outsourcing production to keep costs as low as possible; however, by doing so, they are jeopardizing quality control and consistency. Having said this, outsourcing may slow down because of the government’s plan to increase tariffs on imported goods. So either clothing companies will continue outsourcing production and increase prices, or they will have to bring production back to the US and increase prices.

Something we are striving to accomplish within the next few years is to make Koukla Robes into a nonprofit organization. One with a business model similar to Tom’s shoes or Warby Parker where for every Koukla bathrobe or bath wrap purchased, one will be given to someone in need.
